When someone mentions testosterone, it's easy to picture gym bros, bulging biceps and an alarming number of protein shakes.
But here's the plot twist: women need testosterone too.
In fact, this often-overlooked hormone does far more than fuel your sex drive. It plays an important role in your energy, mood, muscle strength, mental clarity and overall sense of wellbeing.
For many women testosterone levels can be too low, leading to uncomfortable symptoms like brain fog, low libido and mood swings.
Now a new study shows just how important testosterone is for women.
Researchers looked at women using testosterone therapy and found some pretty significant results. The study involved 332 women between the ages of 27 and 78 who are currently receiving testosterone therapy. Results showed promising improvements across 8 common symptoms of low testosterone.
Participants in the study reported benefits that extended well beyond improvements in libido. The most commonly reported change was a reduction in fatigue, with 84.3% of women saying they had more energy after starting testosterone therapy.
Around 65% also experienced improvements in mood, including reductions in symptoms of depression, irritability and loss of enjoyment, while many reported better concentration, clearer thinking and improved memory over time.
Interestingly, the researchers found that cognitive improvements tended to develop more gradually, with the most noticeable gains appearing after 4–6 months of treatment rather than in the first few weeks.
Overall, 89.7% of participants reported an improvement in their quality of life, with the degree of improvement increasing the longer they remained on therapy.
Of course, no treatment is a magic wand (if only). This was a retrospective observational study rather than a randomised controlled trial, so it can't prove that testosterone alone caused these improvements.
However, the findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that, when carefully prescribed and monitored, testosterone may support energy, mood, cognitive function and overall wellbeing in some women, not just sexual desire, although that's certainly a welcome benefit for many.
Because let's be honest - if you've ever found yourself staring into the fridge wondering why you opened it, or feeling exhausted before you've even finished your morning coffee, you'll know that hormones can have a habit of making themselves known.
This latest study adds to the growing evidence (and what we’ve known all along) that testosterone can help improve energy, mood, mental clarity and overall wellbeing for women.
Despite its reputation, women naturally produce testosterone throughout their lives. It's made by the ovaries and adrenal glands and quietly gets on with a surprising number of jobs behind the scenes.
Healthy testosterone levels help support:
Energy
Mood
Muscle strength
Mental sharpness
Sexual desire
Overall wellbeing
As we reach our 40s, hormone levels naturally begin to shift. While oestrogen tends to steal the spotlight, testosterone can decline too, and that may be part of the reason why you don't quite feel like yourself.
Low testosterone can develop gradually, making it easy to mistake the symptoms for stress, ageing or simply having a busy life.
Some common symptoms include:
Feeling permanently tired, even after a good night's sleep
A disappearing libido
Mood changes
Brain fog
Reduced muscle strength
Taking longer to recover after exercise
Generally feeling a little flat
